Belgium is a bilingual country, where French and Flemish (which is similar to Dutch) are both widely spoken. To avoid showing favoritism toward one language or another, the coins of Belgium come in two varieties every year, one bearing its text in French and one in Flemish. This coin is of the Flemish variety, with the Flemish name of Belgium, “Belgie”. This version of the 1 frank coin was made between 1950 and 1988. The mintage in 1980 was 66.5 million.
