French Polynesia, 5 francs, 1986

It’s a large coin today, about the size of a half dollar.

French Polynesia, 5 francs, 1986 (KM #12)

Mintage is a low 600,000, much rarer than any American coin in my collection. This type of coin has been minted since 1975, and it is one of the largest aluminum coins in production in the world today. Five francs is worth 5.5 cents USD. The French Polynesian franc was founded in 1945, and is used in Tahiti, Bora Bora, and other French colonial islands in the Pacific.
